The Jewish cemetery in Lesko

Having visited the synagogue in Lesko, the tourists from Sosnowa Aleja saw the Jewish cemetery placed near the synagogue. It is said to be one of the biggest and oldest Jewish cemetery in Poland with many gravestones which have been in a very good condition so far. The cemetery was founded before 1548 on the top of the hill close to the synagogue. Narrow stairs lead to the oldest part of the necropolis located on the wooded mountain slope with the gravestones dating back to the first half of the 16th century. The younger part of the cemetery is located at the top of a hill used for burials from the 18th to the 20th century. On the surface of 3.2 ha there are still today more than 2,000 gravestones. During the Second World War the cemetery was the site of the execution of the Jews. A group of 100 people, the elderly and sick people were shot here. The cemetery in Lesko is one of the oldest Jewish cemeteries in Poland, where tombstones are so well preserved.
