Retorts - burning charcoal

The Bieszczady Mountains are known for the places where the charcoal has been burnt for many years. The food prepared on the grill with using such charcoal is the best in the world. The miniature museum has been built at the road between Stuposiany and Muczne. The foresters put there a retort, a cabin for the workers and the notice-board describing the story of burning charcoal. Some retorts are still working in the village called Kołonice, near Baligród.
On the 17th of March 2017 some people staying in Sosnowa Aleja had the opportunity to meet up the recent people dealing with this hard work. The tourists have come to know the details of the burning charcoal process. The air access is limited and controlled in such process. It must be supervised by the experienced staff, because the effect and the quality of the charcoal depends on them. Our tourists may have been among the last witnesses of such process. The new rules for the protection of the environment and ecology does not allow for further burning of charcoal. Therefore the places of burning charcoal are eliminated.
